COPPERHEAD
COPPERHEAD (IN U. S. HISTORY), a term of contempt applied by the republican party to its democratic opponents during the rebellion. It is properly the name of a well-known northern snake, which stings from behind and without warning. (See DEMOCRATIC PARTY, VI.; REBELLION.)
