GRAHAM, William Alexander, was born in Lincoln county, N. C., Sept. 5, 1804, and died at Saratoga Springs, N. Y., Aug. 11, 1875. He was graduated at the university of North Carolina, in 1824, studied law, was a whig United States senator 1840-3, governor 1845-9, secretary of the navy under Fillmore 1850-53, and was the whig candidate for vice-president in 1852.
