JOHNSON, Herschel V., was born in Burke county, Ga., Sept. 18, 1812, and died in Georgia, Aug 16, 1880. He was graduated at Franklin college in 1834, was admitted to the bar in 1837, was democratic United States senator from Georgia 1848-9, was governor of Georgia 1853-7, and received the democratic nomination for the vice-presidency in 1860 in place of Benj.
