Adam Smith on the Invisible Hand
Adam Smith used the phrase "led by an invisible hand to promote an end which was no part of his intention" to capture the subtle economic forces that lead individuals to take actions which often result in ends beneficial to others, even when they focus only on their own economic self-interest.
