About this Selected Essay Reprint
The 12th edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica was published as a two-volume supplement to the renowned 11th edition, during the post-WWI era. These sections from the articles "Austrian Empire" and "Republic of Austria" were written by Ludwig von Mises.
The cuneiform inscription in the Liberty Fund logo is the earliest-known written appearance of the word "freedom" (amagi), or "liberty." It is taken from a clay document written about 2300 B.C. in the Sumerian city-state of Lagash.
