UNDER THE SUPERINTENDENCE OF THE SOCIETY FOR THE IMPROVEMENT OF THE WORKING POPULATION IN THE COUNTY OF GLAMORGAN.
THE following Tales, with others, were written for popular instruction, by the Author of “Conversations on Natural Philosophy, Political Economy, Chemistry,” &c. &c. and kindly presented to this Society by that distinguished person. In announcing Authorship, we depart from our rule; the general grounds of which are these:—Were we to prefix the names of our writers to their articles, there would be danger lest our readers should pay more regard to the authority accompanying the title, than to the importance of the contents; and should undervalue those Tracts, the writers of which might not chuse, for reasons personal to themselves, to allow us the use of their names. But in the present case, the approbation of our early and humble efforts which the permission to make whatever use we please of these contributions implies, is so likely to contribute to the permanent success of our Institution, that as rules are formed for the Society, and not the Society for its rules, the present exception is made. The high character of the Author of the above-named “Conversations,” who has also sent copies of them to the Itinerating Libraries about to be established, renders it desirable that the honour done to the Society by such notice should not be wrapped in secrecy.
