In a Reason story about a humane man who tried to save a deer’s life and got nailed by the government for doing so, Pennsylvania Game Commission Press Secretary Travis Lau admits that there’s “a good possibility the deer would have been euthanized…because deer are poor candidates for rehabilitation.”
He also says, “all wildlife in Pennsylvania is protected—no one owns it.”
Find the contradiction in that last sentence.

Protection inplies ownership.

The first part of the sentence suggests that the deer was protected because it’s public property. Public property is owned by everyone.
It also sounds like the man was doing more to protect the deer than the Game Commission.

Wild life is wild, not owned, other than by itself.
It has liberty, but must be self reliant.
It is not property.
Hunting has rules that give the advantage to most deer. Eg, no salt licks or feeding stations. Humans must have skill like the wolf in hunting and killing deer. Note, guns get only a few days, muzzle loaders twice as many days, and bow hunters more days still.

No “one” owns it. The “collective” owns it. The only problem here is getting the verbs to agree in number.

If no one owns the deer, the deer has complete dominion of itself and is only protected by its instincts in avoiding harm.
